This feature was
located over a meter below ground surface at Fleur
de Lys 1. It is comprised of over 175 spruce and birch timbers, many of
which laid roughly parallel to the quarry face. Based upon preliminary
visual inspections undertaken during excavation, no culturally visible
modifications such as cut marks, lashing marks or use wear were
noted.
In view of the lack of any such "structural" evidence, this feature is
presently interpreted as an expedient working platform using trees
toppled
and/or pulled from the soil of the surrounding area. At least one large
timber has a portion of root remaining, which supports this
interpretation.
Two radiocarbon results: 1610+/-60 (Beta 116637) and 1520+/-50 (Beta
129941)
were derived from samples of this feature. At present, these
timbers
are undergoing conservation at the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial
Conservation Laboratory. |
